Development Department Unveils New Logo, Web Site
Published Apr 07, 2003

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development has a fresh set of tools for doing business.

ECD sports a new logo and uses an updated Web site and collateral pieces, thanks to its Creative Services Division, headed by Mike Kopp, assistant commissioner.

Kopp, a talented communicator with marketing and public relations expertise, runs the in-house group much like an advertising agency.

“In the past, ECD relied heavily on outside vendors and entities to help develop its message and marketing pieces,” he says. “Now we do as much as we can internally because, at the end of the day, it saves taxpayers money.”

ECD counts on attractive and accurate collateral pieces. Taking a professional approach, Kopp and his team conducted market research and held focus groups and brainstorming sessions to get input from key audiences, including ECD marketing representatives and end users.

The result was a new department identity, a more directed family of publications and an updated Web site.

“Our Web site is our portal to the economic development world,” he says. “Companies, consultants and site selectors all over the world are searching for information about Tennessee, and the easiest way for them is to go to a Web site and obtain it electronically. It’s probably our biggest, most important economic development tool.”

With the support of the Creative Services team and ECD’s webmaster, ECD completed the Web site renovation in just six weeks. Kopp calls the Web site a work in progress, and says it will continually offer timely information and feature interactive resources.
