Tennessee Tech Offers 4-Year Web Design Degree
Published Apr 07, 2003
In a world where most people use the Internet more than they use the phone, well-designed, user-friendly Web sites have become essential business tools.
That’s why Tennessee Technological University, located in Cookeville, is offering the state’s first bachelor’s degree in Web design, a way for college students to gain the necessary skills to professionally design Web sites.
Even though the program won’t officially begin until fall 2003, a dozen students have already declared it as their major, and school officials are expecting many more takers.
“The response has been incredible,” says Bob Clougherty Jr., associate professor of English and the Tennessee Tech faculty member in charge of the program. “There are many students who have a great deal of creativity and are proficient with technology. This major allows them the best of both worlds.”
The bachelor’s degree, based in the College of Arts and Sciences, merges a four-year academic program with the technical training needed to design Web sites. The students get the solid core of the arts and sciences general education courses, combined with professional communications, computer science, art, business and several other subjects. The result is a program tailored for one of today’s most popular markets, Clougherty says. The courses have been designed to include certification-required materials so that students can take their certification exams if desired and earn the degree and certifications at the same time.
