Spring Hill Plant Puts New Models in Orbit

With its performance-tuned suspension and supercharged engine, the 2004 Ion Red Line is a street car with the feel of a race car.
The Spring Hill automaker is introducing a new series of performance-tuned vehicles called Red Line, which will debut in early 2004. The first two vehicles in the series will be the 2004 VUE Red Line, a sporty version of Saturn’s SUV compact, and the 2004 Ion Red Line, a showy rendition of the Ion coupe.
“ This series will generate a new level of interest in Saturn among those who appreciate a blend of horsepower, handling and sporty looks,” says Jill Lajdziak, Saturn vice president for sales, service and marketing. “The Red Line insignia ushers in an exciting new era for Saturn.”
Both Red Line versions will ride lower to the ground, and will be equipped with bigger wheels and tires, beefed-up engines and tricked-out ground effects. The VUE Red Line will be available in onyx black, silver nickel or electric lime, while the Ion Red Line will have an exterior color palette of black, blue or silver.
The Red Line vehicles will be built at the Saturn manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, on the same assembly lines as the standard VUEs and Ions. Saturn plans to build approximately 3,000 VUE Red Line models and 5,000 Ion Red Line coupes, with production scheduled to begin in January 2004. Prices will be released closer to the start date.
Saturn has also announced that it is adding a VUE model in 2005 that will feature a hybrid powertrain (gasoline engine and dual electric motors). That particular vehicle will deliver 40 mpg in overall fuel economy.
