Starbucks Likes La Vergne for Coffee To Go
Published Apr 07, 2004

The sweet smell of success in Rutherford County just might smell suspiciously – and deliciously – like a Starbucks Arabian Mocha Java or a Decaf Caffé Verona. That’s because Starbucks Coffee Company ships its varied products from a new regional facility in La Vergne to about 900 Starbucks locations from Wisconsin to Florida.

Three other states were in the running for the Starbucks operation, but Tennessee landed the project in 2004.

“I’ll tell you that strategic location had a lot to do with it, as well as the quality of the transportation network and the personnel required to manage this business,” says Scott McWilliams, chief executive officer of Ozburn Hessey Logistics.

Ozburn Hessey is the third- party logistics provider that leases the 125,000-square-foot distribution warehouse near Interstate 24. Starbucks is Ozburn Hessey’s client.

McWilliams says his company will eventually employ 75 workers at the site.

He gives credit to local and state economic developers for helping cement the deal. “They all did an excellent job of generating community interest in the client,” he says.

The distribution center represents a $3.2 million investment by the full-service logistics giant, the employer of more than 2,000 workers in warehousing and distribution facilities in 13 states.
