Chattanooga Firm Spins Future with Nanofibers
Published Apr 08, 2002

eSpin’s nanofibers, shown here in comparison with a human hair, can be used in products ranging from biomedical devices to thermal insulation.

A technology firm based in Tennessee is emerging as a global leader in the science of nanotechnology. eSpin Technologies Inc. in Chattanooga has already established itself as the only company in the United States providing custom-made nanofibers for numerous research efforts around the world, notes its founder and president, Jayesh Doshi, Ph.D.

The technology holds promise for breakthroughs in a variety of applications, including manufacturing, biotechnology, health care, electronics and aerospace.

“The diameter of an individual nanofiber is typically 100-200 times smaller than that of a human hair and is in the range of 50-500 nanometers,” says Doshi. “The nanoscale diameter makes them uniquely suitable for a broad range of applications based on high specific surface area that we are just beginning to understand.”

Key new end-use opportunities and strategic co-development partners around the world have endorsed the company’s technical strength through repeat research-driven purchases and development agreements
